Activity 1: Handout

Rocks are all around us, from the ground we walk and drive on to the foundations and walls of our homes, and are even used to furnish and decorate our homes. With your classmates, brainstorm specific uses of rocks you have seen in your personal life (excluding jewelry). Once a list has been created, use the internet to create a list of rocks commonly used in these purposes (minimum5). You may find the following websites (and others like them) to be helpful:

Welcome to Earth Science

Earth Science is a content course so much of the time will be focused on the content including space, weather, the spheres. Because you are all education majors you can expect assignments which will focus on science lessons. We will also have some fun with some in class activities. At the end of the semester we will have a mini science fair so start thinking about your project.

Carbon Footprint

Assignment

We’ve all heard that we should “Go Green”, but what exactly does this mean? What impact do we have on the earth in our everyday lives? Taking the Ecological Footprint Quiz will give you the size of your personal footprint on the earth and its environment. Be warned – your feet are bigger than you think!

Take the online Ecological Footprint Quiz at http://www.myfootprint.org/en/ and record your results. Keep them in a safe place for future reference.
